just bought 1k of preps

from honeyville farms. cans of powdered eggs, some cases of the freeze dried veggies, and some cases of the freeze dried fruit packs.

i figure this bumps my family of four up another 1 month or so.

i'm at probably 6 months now. still feeling bad that after 6 months we start to starve. :confused_ma:

i'm thinking of getting 1k of preps soon...

im focusing on canned foods mostly, vitamin supplements, coconut oil and lots of HONEY so i can make booze from it..

water is key.. since you can go 30days without food.

luckily, i live right next to a HUGE lake, so i'm not freaking about the water part. i can walk about 30 feet and get all i need. as for booze, i'm going to start stockpiling that next. a fifth of whiskey will probably be good barter material someday ;)

I'd get pints.

good idea about the pints. also, i can probably sample one or 2 (to make sure they are okay) and not feel guilty about it.

I hope you get what you ordered....I am now the owner of 6 #10 cans of dried onions that was not on my order. Honeyville stated they would ship the veggies I did order and I would then send the onions back. Still waiting for the veggies :36_1_28:

Very strange. My last order through them was 7 big boxes or various things. One box was non-existent...a 50lb bag of farina. I pulled up the tracking number they send and UPS noted it was damaged in shipping and was sent back to them in California. I waited a couple days and called them and left a message. Got a couple back an hour later apologizing that my box was damaged and they'd get a new one out on the next truck. It came a few days later. I'd say call them and see what's up.

Well at least you'll die happy. Their free dried strawberries are delicious straight out of the can. I don't much care for them re-hydrated. Contrary to what they say in their ad about how the texture will be just like fresh -- hooeey -- they'll be limp. But toss a few on top of your bowl of cereal. Delicious. And the sizable pile of powder and crumbs left at the bottom of the can can go into a blender with milk and honey to make a wonderful fruit drink. I bought a whole case of just strawberries, LOL.

I have ordered from Honeyville several times in the past year or so with a few damaged cans. They have always made it right... fast. They have always sent me replacement cans the same day and a postage paid return label. They are a very good company to deal with in my opinion. (and I am a little man order of no more than a case at a time, so don't think that treatment was different because I had large orders.)

Re: just bought 1k of preps

At first my preps were guns and ammo (y2k timeframe) and some PM and then I added bug-out gear (lived in a city at the time). Got an old points & condenser Jeep. When I first started buying LTS food, I bought 11 cases of the MH already prepped variety meals, like Turkey Tet and Beef stroganoff, etc. I figured that would make a good base to build on as I could survive a while with just those items without a lot of cooking-if I had to.
Then I started ordering cans of vegies, fruits, drinks, milk, meat, cheese etc., adding specialty items and more staples as they were 'on sale'. I also started putting up buckets of things I could get locally cheaper like pasta, rice, beans, coffee, quick oats, ramen etc. The first buckets I packed have a variety of foods in them so I only have to open one at a time instead of several to get the same variety. Now I am packing one thing to a bucket Along the way I picked up some MRE's and Emerg Protine bars then ordered canned butter and cheese. Over time I have built up a pretty good variety of stored food and barrels of water.
Now I am working on storing energy, at first in the form of propane and gasoline (don't have anything diesel yet) this is for short term I know, solar and wind power are next. Everything in steps so that SHTF can come at anytime and there will be at least something to ease the initial problems.

i've started stockpiling fuel too. but man, i sometimes feel like my garage is a giant bomb waiting to go off. do you live on a farm or something and store yours away from the house? i'm in a condo. i would never put huge stockpiles of propane in the house, but i feel the garage isn't much better.

SHTF Scenario #1: The propane provides a few meager hours of heat as you try desperately to but ultimately prove incapable of staving of zombie legions. In a desperate act you can rig the garage as a trap in which dozens of zombies will be incinerated along with you.

SHTF Scenario #2: The propane erupts within the confines of the home sometime during an otherwise ordinary and possibly pleasant day. If you are not home at the time insurance is not going to pick up the bill. You are screwed and it is all your fault. If you are home hopefully the explosions kills you swiftly otherwise you spend your life painfully mutilated and deaf and maybe even blind. The upside is you will certainly fit right in with the zombie hordes when they arrive.

You pick which SHTF scenario you are storing propane for.

I faced a similar situation, with wanting to store flammables (propane, kerosine, gasoline), but unwilling to store them in the garage.

Solution: I put up a shed in the backyard, as far from the house as possible (200').

Same here. I stashed the gasoline jerry cans (the sale of which was outlawed by our benevolent govt 1/1/09, by the way) & kerosene cans & propane cylinders in the shed out in the back yard. I still need to get some sort of alarm system for the shed & another outbuilding.

Store diesel, store it in your garage, don't worry about it.

Wait...what? I think I missed something significant here. The sale of jerry cans has been outlawed??? Is it a particular type of jerry can that was outlawed or jerry cans in general?

Edit: Never mind. I found the information. It's another nanny-state law to protect stupid kids and inattentive parents. What was that old saying, "When the last nail is driven into the coffin of freedom, we'll say we did it for the children"?

Let's get this straight, its costing you $1000 per month for survival food supplies ?

I think it would better if you would quit buying that over priced freeze dried crap from the rip-off internet retailers with wholesome corporate names ...
